Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, died on Monday at the age of 88.

He died after a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure, the Vatican said.

Francis, who was elected pope in 2013, made a historic visit to Ireland in 2018 in what was the first papal visit to the country in nearly four decades.

During his two-day stay, he participated in the World Meeting of Families in Dublin and visited the Knock Shrine in Co Mayo.
