The family of a man who died after being assaulted last weekend in Blanchardstown, north Dublin, has said his organs have been donated to “help others in need”.

Alex Coughlan, aged 37, died after suffering serious injuries in an attack near his home.

In a statement shared on behalf of his family, Mr Coughlan was remembered for his kindness and warmth, and his presence that “touched so many lives”.

“In an incredible final act of kindness and generosity, Alex’s organs have been donated to help others in need — a lasting gift that reflects the caring and selfless person he was,” read the statement.

“During this incredibly difficult time, Alex’s family would like to sincerely thank all the staff involved in his care at Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown for their compassion, support, and kindness. They would also like to thank all family and friends who have been there for them with messages, visits, prayers, and support over the past days,” it continued.

A GoFundMe set up to support his family has raised over €16,000.

Mr Coughlan was found unconscious near his home on the Mill Road and brought to hospital in a critical condition last Sunday.

He died three days later.

Two teenage boys were arrested as part of the investigation and appeared in court on Wednesday.

They were charged in relation to the assault and robbery, and were remanded in custody. They are due to appear in court next week.
