Quinn criticises ministers who 'think aloud' ahead of Budget

The Minister for Education Ruairí Quinn has said it does not help when people "think aloud" ahead of the Budget.

Mr Quinn made the comments following speculation about possible cuts to fee-paying schools in December.

It is understood the minister is considering cuts to the €100m State subsidy for private schools, a move which has been criticised by some Fine Gael TDs, who said it would cost the State money in the long run.

However, Mr Quinn has refused to be drawn on the issue, saying he will make his views known at the Cabinet table.

Mr Quinn said: "Well it doesn't help for people to think aloud, because sometimes ordinary people take that as a decision and become unnecessarily concerned about things that may or may not happen."
