Mayo crash death: Woman's family to take civil case against council

An inquest into the death of a young woman in Co Mayo has returned a verdict of accidental death.

Twenty-two-year-old Ashling Gallagher from Bunacurry, Achill Island died when her van collided with a cement lorry on the Mulranny to Newport road in 2004.

Ms Gallagher’s family had argued that the condition of the road's surface was to blame for the crash.

At the time, the road had recently been resurfaced and a final layer had still to be applied.

Mayo County Council had denied responsibility and today the coroner returned a verdict of accidental death.

Speaking to Midwest Radio, Aisling's mother Kathleen said the family plans to take a civil case against Mayo County Council.
