Food watchdog issues major recall of chicken from several retailers

Several chicken products across Lidl, Aldi, Dunnes, Supervalu, Centra and Tesco have been recalled due to salmonella contamination concerns

A batch of Lidl's Free Range 100% Irish Chicken Breast Fillets 291g has been confirmed to have Salmonella.

Several retailers have issued recalls of chicken products due to possible salmonella contamination.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has issued recalls for several chicken products from Lidl, Aldi, Dunnes, Supervalu, Centra and Tesco due to possible presence of salmonella.

Batches of Lidl 100% Irish Chicken Breast Fillet products, diced and free range, were recalled due to the confirmed presence of salmonella; other products are being recalled out of precaution “due to the possible presence of salmonella” by the FSAI.

The recall covers own-brand chicken products, Manor Farm, and Western Brand, such as the ‘Inishella’ range.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause foodborne illness. Infections are usually transmitted through contaminated water or food, particularly poultry, eggs, and unpasteurized milk.

People infected with salmonella typically develop symptoms between 12 and 36 hours after infection, but this can range between six and 72 hours.

The most common symptom is diarrhoea, which can sometimes be bloody. Other symptoms may include abdominal cramps, fever, and headaches. The illness usually lasts four to seven days. 

Diarrhoea can occasionally be severe enough to require hospital admission. The elderly, infants, and those with impaired immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.

Although the implicated batches are past their use-by dates, the products are suitable for home freezing. Consumers are advised to check their freezers for the batches concerned. Recall notices will also be displayed at the point of sale.
