Three-in-one anti-HIV pill launched
A new HIV pill that provides a cocktail of three drugs in one tablet has been launched in the UK.
Trizivir, from GlaxoSmithKline, is designed to make it easier for people with HIV to treat themselves.
The new pill contains three potent anti-HIV drugs, and can be used without changing diet.
Until now HIV therapy has involved carefully combining different drugs in the right doses, often accompanied by dietary restrictions.
Research shows that patients often fail to maintain the treatment course, and worsen their condition as a result.
Consultant physician Dr Margaret Johnson, from the Royal Free Hospital, London, says: "Trizivir is a good choice for treatment-naive patients, and especially for those with adherence issues. "
The medicine contains three anti-HIV drugs known as nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs).
