A cruel, late second goal, deep in stoppage time, has left St. Patrick's Athletic with the proverbial mountain to climb in their Europa League third qualifying round, second leg match with Karpaty Lviv at Richmond Park next week.

Pete Mahon's Saints looked to be holding out for a manageable 1-0 defeat when substitute Andrei Voronkov rifled home a free kick three minutes into injury time.

Karpaty were dangerous from early on with Pacheco having the first effort on goal; firing wide on 24 minutes.

Ten minutes later, St. Pat's found themselves behind when defender Artem Fedetskiy scored from a corner by Spaniard Lucas Martinez.

But St. Pat’s were in the game and threatened through defender Brian Shortall who brought a comfortable save from home keeper Martin Bogatinov from Ian Daly’s corner early in the second half.

Karpaty soon regained the initiative, though, and Gary Rogers had to produce the save of the game from defender Igor Oshchypko on 68 minutes.

Rogers was there again on 88 minutes to save well from Voronkov, before the substitute delivered a potentially tie winning second goal at the death.
