U2 receive lifetime achievement award
U2 were honoured by the music industry today with a lifetime achievement award.
The Irish superstars were winners at the Nordoff-Robbins Silver Clef Awards.
Frontman Bono paid tribute to his fellow bandmates.
“I’m standing here as the lucky member of a great band,” he told the audience at the star studded ceremony in London.
And he urged the nation to get behind Live 8.
“I don’t think it’s the pop stars or the musicians that the politicians are afraid of, it’s the audience. They are young people and they can change things,” he said.
The award, which raises money for music therapy, are in their 30th year.
Veteran rockers The Who were the recipients of the 30th Anniversary Award.
Welsh opera star Katherine Jenkins was named winner of the Classical Award.
She said: “I’m completely surprised and thrilled to receive this.
“Up until about 18 months ago I was a music teacher myself so I really know the wonderful effect music can have on children.”
Other winners including Natasha Bedingfield, Lemar, Razorlight and McFly.
Bob Geldof won the International Award for his work in Africa. It was picked up by Midge Ure who joked: “Bob can’t be here today, he’s in Paris organising another bloody Live 8.”
Celebrity guests included Dido, Jay Kay, Sir George Martin and Myleene Klass. The event was hosted by Chris Evans.
