Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine say they have captured the shattered remains of Donetsk airport, further dashing hopes for a lasting peace agreement.

The airport, the centre of bitter battles since May, has been split between the separatists and government forces who held onto the civilian terminal.

Ukraine said government troops were holding their positions.

A new truce in December began to unravel last week, escalating to artillery exchanges
