USA: In one of Chicago’s most dangerous neighbourhoods, a small group is trying a new tactic to curb the violence - by teaching yoga.
I Grow Chicago is offering yoga classes on the street in Englewood. Teacher Tameka Lawson says yoga’s meditative focus could help cooler heads prevail the next time violence or vengeance looms.
USA: Many stores and restaurants are telling people not to bring their guns inside, but one western Colorado restaurant not only embraces the practice of packing heat, it encourages its customers to carry openly — and its waitresses do, too.
As she takes your order at Shooters Grill in the town of Rifle — yes, Rifle — waitress Ashlee Saenz carries a pad, pen and a loaded Ruger .357 Blackhawk revolver holstered on her leg, Old West style.
It’s loaded, and she knows how to use it.
Colorado is among the states where openly carrying a gun in public is legal. The issue has made headlines after gun rights activists carrying loaded rifles gathered in Target stores in Texas, Alabama and North Carolina to demonstrate their support of “open carry” laws. On Wednesday, Target Corp. asked its customers “respectfully” to not bring firearms into stores.
But in Rifle, Saenz, her co-workers and her customers at Shooters Grill are encouraged to bring their holstered guns in the restaurant, The Glenwood Springs Post Independent reports.
State law allows local governments and businesses to prohibit guns in their buildings, but a sign on Shooters’ front door reads: “Guns are welcome on premises. Please keep all weapons holstered unless need arises. In such case, judicious marksmanship is appreciated.”
Shooters also hosts training that qualifies customers for Colorado and Utah concealed weapon permits. The $75 price tag includes dinner.
USA: The Black Widow has been outeaten.
Two-time defending champion Sonya Thomas lost her hot dog eating title to Miki Sudo, who wolfed down 34 franks and buns in 10 minutes to win the women’s division of the annual Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island.
Thomas, of Alexandria, Virginia, was only able to devour 27 hot dogs and buns.
In the men’s competition, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut hoped to put away 70 hot dogs in 10 minutes. Matt Stonie, who finished second last year, will have another try for top spot.

ENGLAND: Dog-owners are being urged to stay vigilant after a much-loved family pet nearly died when it was bitten by a poisonous snake.
The mouth of Cookie the eight-year-old greyhound bitch swelled up to the size of a tennis ball after she was struck on the snout by an adder at Cannock Chase, a Staffordshire beauty spot. Owner Lynn Pallatina said Cookie was lucky to be alive, after vets managed to get anti-venom into the dog, but Ms Pallatina said there was still a chance the venomous bite had caused permanent damage to the dog’s organs. “Cookie has been incredibly lucky,” she said.
GERMANY: Heavy metal really can do your head in, according to doctors who treated a Motorhead fan with a blood clot on the brain caused by head-banging.
The 50-year-old German developed the condition after getting carried away at one of the hardcore rock band’s concerts. It is the fourth documented case linked to head-banging — one of which proved fatal.
Specialists treated the fan at Hannover Medical School two weeks after he started suffering a constant, worsening headache. Surgeons successfully removed the clot via a hole drilled into the skull, leading to a full recovery.
