QUIRKY WORLD ... Train passengers on the right track with surprise sing-along

ENGLAND: The moment strangers broke into an impromptu sing-along on a train has been captured on camera.

Claudine Hope Bolster, 41, was travelling from Liverpool Central with her family when passengers in her carriage started singing and dancing with one another on New Year’s Eve.

She said: “As we sat down, this guy just started singing and then everyone started dancing and singing.

“People in the next carriage were looking through the window to see what was going on and then they started singing and then it became a sing-off.”

Mobile-phone footage captured by the mother-of-two shows two hearty renditions, one of the Tom Jones 1968 hit ‘Delilah’ and another, in fitting with the surroundings, The O’Jays’ ‘Love Train’.

Close to collapse

ENGLAND: A historic castle close to the Queen of England’s residence at Balmoral has been left on the brink of collapse into a swollen river after intense flooding.

The owner of Abergeldie Castle was forced to evacuate the 16th century A-listed tower house in Aberdeenshire after the River Dee swept away about 60ft of land behind the property, leaving it only a few feet from the water. John Gordon, 76, and his wife left their 450-year-old home when a wall in the garden was ripped away by the torrent.

Getting fit Kwik

ENGLAND: Kale juice, fad diets and Lycra are all off the menu at a new fitness class being trialled at a London car garage. Kwik Fit technicians and personal trainer Mikah Simpson have designed the workout using only car and van tyres.

The stripped down, no-frills exercise regime has been billed as ‘Fit Kwik’.

Generous girlfriend

USA: A New Hampshire man found his perfect match in more ways than one when he first met his girlfriend on a golf course.

Jack Simard, 49, is slated for his second kidney transplant around Valentine’s Day and the donor is his girlfriend, Michelle LaBranche.

When LaBranche found out Simard was seeking a kidney donor, she got tested to see if she was eligible, but did not tell him. Doctors were surprised that her kidneys turned out to be compatible.

Snap-happy robber

USA: Police in Northern California have arrested a man accused of armed robbery thanks to a Snapchat selfie he took with one of the victims.

Pacific Grove police arrested 18-year-old Victor Almanza-Martinez after he and two others approached four victims at Lover Point Park and allegedly robbed them of their belongings, including a car.

The suspects fled in the stolen car, which is still missing, but, before leaving, Almanza-Martinez and a female victim exchanged Snapchat information and posed for a selfie together. Police say the selfie helped them track down Almanza-Martinez.

Big Apple chilly dip

USA: New Year’s Day was a time to chill out for a throng of adventurous swimmers who started 2016 with a dip in the Atlantic Ocean off New York City.

An estimated 2,000 people participated in the annual Coney Island Polar Bear plunge on a chilly Friday.

National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration measurements show air temperatures in the area were around 5C (41F), while the ocean was a bit warmer.

Some people wore wetsuits, but others sported only bikinis.

The cool event had a warm purpose, as it raised money for Camp Sunshine, a camp for children with life-threatening illnesses.
