QUIRKY WORLD... Inmate fails to make clean escape from jail

USA: A New Mexico inmate has been captured after he escaped from jail by hiding in a laundry basket.

Officials say 28-year-old Kevin Matthew Perkins packed himself in the basket to get away from the Metropolitan Detention Centre. Authorities say the laundry basket was headed to another facility.

When an officer opened a truck door, officials say Perkins jumped out of the basket and ran. Albuquerque police later received a breaking and entering call at an assisted living complex. That’s where they found broken glass from a window and followed a trail of blood that led to Perkins.

Mountain-climbers have made a grisly discovery in the Mont Blanc range of the Alps — the body of a young climber preserved in ice for 32 years.

The body of Patrice Hyvert, who had been training to be a guide, was found by two mountain-climbers.

Hyvert was last seen alive on March 1, 1982, when aged 23, he took off on a solitary climb up the western side of the “Aiguille Verte” mountain, part of the Mont Blanc massif that straddles the French-Italian border, before bad weather set in in the afternoon.

Another climber was evacuated from the same mountain two days later, but Hyvert was never found.

The discovery came as a shock to Hyvert’s 82-year-old father, Gerard. “I’m a mountain man, and I would have preferred him to stay up there,” he told RTL radio. “He was better on a mountain than in a coffin. He was in his element.”

Police say after they arrested the 20-year-old, he told them he had taken LSD. OWNER CALLS 911 AFTER CAT GOES WILD

USA: A 4-year-old Russian blue cat named Kush is being quarantined after going crazy in a Florida home, prompting its owners to call 911.

The feline scratched owners Teresa and James Gregory on their arms and legs, causing them to retreat to a bedroom.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports Teresa Gregory said she had stepped on the cat’s tail earlier in the day and the cat went after her husband. They locked Kush in the bedroom and when they let it out, Kush wasn’t happy.

Kush was placed in quarantine for 10 days.

A pair of scarecrows have been carved into a maze to celebrate the launch of a new book from the creators of The Gruffalo.

The design, cut out of a 10-acre maize field, recreates the front cover of The Scarecrows’ Wedding, written by author Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.

Main characters scarecrows Betty O’Barley and Harry O’Hay can be seen from the skies above the maze, which has been carved at the National Forest Adventure Farm in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire.
