Mother held in murder probe

BRITISH detectives were questioning a young mother yesterday on suspicion of murdering her four-year-old daughter.

The 22-year-old, who has not been named, left her home in Wallasey, Merseyside, in the early hours of the morning to report the death from a phone box nearly half a kilometre away.

She was arrested at the scene of the child’s death on Oakdale Avenue as horrified neighbours woke to sirens and a street of blue flashing lights.

Neighbours said despite the woman and her child — who she still pushed round in a pram — living there for two years, no one knew them.

Residents repeatedly said the woman “kept herself to herself”.

A small floral tribute sprung up outside the red-brick house.
