Ken Loach film I, Daniel Blake selected for New York festival

Ken Loach’s Palme d’Or-winning film I, Daniel Blake has been chosen for the New York Film Festival. The British director’s movie about a struggling unemployed man was one of 25 announced for the festival’s main line-up.

I, Daniel Blake stars Dave Johns as Daniel, who finds himself unable to work after a heart attack.

When he applies for benefits he encounters a labyrinth of bureaucracy but finds a comrade in Katie (Hayley Squires).

The 80-year-old Kes director’s movie won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival and is the only British film on the New York bill.

The New York Film Festival, which starts on September 30 and runs for 18 days, will bring together films from across the globe.

Italian director Gianfranco Rosi’s migrant crisis documentary Fire At Sea, which won Berlin’s Golden Bear, is on the bill alongside Spanish director Pedro Almodovar’s Julieta, about a mother and her estranged daughter.

Documentary feature The 13th, which looks at the amendment to abolish slavery in the US, will open the festival, while the closing night gala will be Amazonian thriller The Lost City Of Z, starring Twilight actor Robert Pattinson.

His former co-star and ex-girlfriend Kristen Stewart has two films in the line-up — Personal Shopper and Certain Women.
