Bernie Ecclestone mother-in-law kidnapped, reports say

The Brazilian mother-in-law of Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone has reportedly been kidnapped in São Paulo and is being held for a ransom of $36.5m (€32m).

67-year-old Aparecida Schunck was abducted from her home in the Interlagos suburb of the city last Friday night, according to the magazine Veja, although Brazilian police have not officially commented on the reports.

Ecclestone, 85, is one of the most powerful men in sport and is worth an estimated $3.1bn (€2.7bn).

The F1 magnate married Ms Flosi in 2012, three years after meeting the now 38-year-old at the Brazilian Grand Prix. He divorced his former wife of 25 years, Slavica Radic, to be with her and they live in the UK.

Abductions were common in Brazil in the 2000s and sports stars were often a target. There are also concerns as Rio is due to host the Olympics within the next few weeks.

Meanwhile Brazil’s suspended president Dilma Rousseff and her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will boycott the opening ceremony at the Olympics, officials said yesterday.

Their absence at the August 5 ceremony highlights the political crisis in Brazil, with Rousseff facing possible removal from office in an impeachment trial shortly after the games end.
