Why do we pretend Irish is still a popular language?

There are times when I find it difficult to be a proud citizen.

The rise of Sinn Féin, the cheer leaders for the IRA murder campaign, is one such occasion.

However, the enormous ‘Yes’ vote for same-sex marriage puts us high on the world stage as a people to be respected.

I wonder if it would have been a violation of our Constitution if the returning officer at Dublin Castle had first given the result in English?

Only a minority of people speak Irish.

This was evident when the result was announced to mute cheers, until it was said in English, and was then greeted with wild applause.
