Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s response to the worst floods in recent memory, announcing that the Government had “put together a humanitarian fund of €15m, pending an assessment”, for those affected, somehow left me underwhelmed.
For a man who has — at times — astounded the nation with emotional and often moving speeches, Kenny has an uncanny knack of sounding particularly like a bank manager, staring over his pince-nez spectacles at his unfortunate country.
Imagine Martin Luther King saying “I have a dream, that one day — pending assessment — this nation will rise up ...” and you get my drift.
