UN says child has right to be cared for by parents

Your correspondent Ciaran O Raghallaigh (Letters, March 16) disputes my assertion that neither the European Union (EU) nor United Nations (UN) state that a child has a right to a father and mother ‘where possible’.

I would like to challenge that point.

This is the full text of Article 7 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child:

‘The child shall be registered immediately after birth and shall have the right from birth to a name, the right to acquire a nationality and as far as possible, the right to know and be cared for by his or her parents.’
