Stop making the EU the bad guy of the crash

When Mike Mahon tells us that Irish governments ‘sold out the sovereignty of our country to the European bankers’ he is not in accord with the facts (Letters, January 25).

Like all the other nearly 30 democratic members of the EU this country made a sovereign decision to join the EU. This was backed by referendum.

The fact that this country’s most powerful citizens made decisions which bankrupted the country does not render the decision to join the EU invalid.

The fact that the taxpayers of other EU countries, some of them poorer than Ireland, subscribed billions to a bailout when this country went bankrupt only supports the sovereign decision to join the EU.
