Like all ‘pro-same-sex marriage’ commentators, Victoria White, possibly willfully, misses the point of the opposing campaign.
It is concern for children. She talks about unnecessary fuss over relationships that cannot produce babies. That is the point of concern: they do.
Babies will be conceived via sperm banks and surrogacy, and children will grow up without knowing their biological parents or family history.
Ms White ignores the ethical issues of such third-party reproduction. She is correct in saying that “it is too early for research on attitudes towards homosexuality in the seventeen countries worldwide that have already legalised gay marriage”.
Is it not equally too early to learn of outcomes for children in same-sex marriages? She quotes, without context, the high rate of suicide in Ireland. Suicide rates are higher in Sweden, Canada and Greenland than in Ireland.
It is dangerous to make self-serving assumptions about the causes of these terrible statistics. She says she is “happily married” and would not deny anyone else that possibility, whatever their orientation.
Would she also think it is important that her children are ‘happily parented’ and that all children should be as privileged as hers, and know their parents, have a relationship with them, and experience that unique, enriching love?
