Sex offender’s friends disgraced themselves

I AM absolutely gutted for the woman who had to witness 50 friends of Danny Foley, who was convicted of sexually assaulting her, shake his hand and hug him in court while he was awaiting sentencing in Tralee Circuit Criminal Court (Irish Examiner, December 17).

In addition to being found guilty of sexually assaulting the victim the judge handing down the custodial sentence stated that Foley had also lied about several things during the trial.

So not only did Foley sexually assault the woman, he then went on to show no remorse for his actions. None.

How traumatic it must have been for this very brave woman to have to witness such a disgusting display of solidarity by the “friends” of Danny Foley in court. Shame on every single one of these people. They are a disgrace to themselves, their families and their communities.

For decades thousands of primarily Irish women and children have had to carry the burden of sexual assault in secret.

We now live in a time when, thankfully, the stigma of speaking out publicly against this monstrous crime has lifted, except it seems for the 50 friends of Danny Foley. From their actions in court it can only be assumed they would like to turn back the clock to those dark times.
