How convenient that Irish Rail has to sell surplus carriages for scrap.
As Ireland has a different railway gauge to the rest of Europe, the absence of surplus rolling stock will prevent the opening up of the Irish Rail network to competition as any new operator would have to have new stock built solely for use in Ireland, making it uneconomic to do so.
