Politicians won’t make themselves accountable to voters

In recent days I answered the door bell to one of our TDs

I wanted to take the opportunity to discuss what I see as a lack of democracy in our political/electoral system. I made the point that once elected, party members become subject to the party system thereby ignoring promises made to voters.

In addition there is no procedure whereby TDs can be held accountable to the voters between elections. The answer I got was “this is the system we have”.

My reply: “We have this system because it suits politicians and political parties who do not want to be held responsible for their actions”.
