Music school plea

I WISH to voice my dismay at the unfolding situation at the Cork School of Music.

There was a lot of blood, sweat and tears involved in persuading the Government to build the new school.

One of the main purposes for building it in the first place was the huge number of young people in Cork city and county who wished to learn music.

I now read that the authorities there want to reduce the number of young people attending and use this wonderful facility as a third-level institution. This a very shortsighted view.

They hardly need me to point out that a reduction in the supply of young musicians will mean that in a few years they will have much fewer third-level musicians.

I hope the pleas of the parents’ association at school of music do not fall on deaf ears.
