Irish politics ignores global issues to its peril

The truism that all politics are local is being taken both too far and not far enough in the Irish election debates.

We ignore important interconnected international matters at our peril including climate change, refugee crises, conflicts in Middle East, Palestine and Africa, and the damaging militarisation of Europe and the world.

In this era of state and non-state terrorism, instant communication and erosion of borders the whole world is now local.

US military use of Shannon airport is both local and global and is contributing to the killing of innocents as is Russian use of military bases in Syria.

The gospels written 2000 years ago tell us our neighbours are all humankind.
