Ireland needs to speak up on behalf of refugees and act on their resettlement

The shocking death tolls outlined in your coverage (World News, January 6) missed the vital statistic that the EU has only resettled 0.17% of the refugees to whom, in September, it committed to offering safety and hope.

In the four months since, just 272 refugees have been moved from frontline states to those supposedly offering solidarity to men, women and children fleeing war and terror.

In spite of the upcoming general election, it is time for Ireland to speak up at European level and act on a national level.

At the Immigrant Council of Ireland we believe a decision should be taken to recommit a naval vessel to search and rescue in the Mediterranean in 2016.
