Mary O’Regan reports (Nov 18) that President Higgins’ first UK state visit “is expected to build on the political, economic and cultural ties between both countries”.

Closer ties with our nearest neighbour are to be welcomed but this incessant sycophantic reporting of Queen Elizabeth is not.

She is Commander-in-Chief of all the British armed forces of which several thousand still occupy the six counties. Surely we can forge ever stronger links with Britain without this embarrassing forelock tugging?
