Dev, the treaty and a legacy of destruction

MICHAEL Galvin (Letters, July 15) states that “the Anglo-Irish Treaty proved its validity and its relevance is still appreciated today by, among others, Dev’s grandson, Eamon Ó Cuiv”.

Isn’t it a pity Dev himself didn’t recognise the treaty’s “validitiy” all those years ago.

Instead he led Ireland into a bloody and needless civil war, but perhaps, and most unfortuntely for us all, he was the founder of a party that continues to leave a legacy of despair and destruction in its wake for each new generation of Irish people to contend with.
