If David Cameron had real courage and conviction he would call an ‘in-out’ referendum on Britain’s membership of the European Union immediately.
The result would be good for the union, as everyone (in the union) would have to respect the majority decision, even if it was only by a very tight margin, such as 51 to 49 per cent.
The breakdown of the vote in each constituency (Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and England) would be interesting — and might give a lead as to what will happen to the union once the decision on Europe has been made.
