Blair and Ahern stood on shoulders of others

To read Alison O’Connor (Irish Examiner, August 28), it would appear that the peace process started with Ahern and Blair, and because “Fine Gael did not broker this historic agreement... this will always stick in the craw of Fine Gael”. I was surprised to read such mean-minded words.

The media consistently fail to acknowledge the work of others leading up to the Good Friday Agreement. I refer to the work of Hume, Mallon, FitzGerald, Reynolds, Haughey and others — including countless nameless, civil servants. Ahern and Blair completed a process standing on the shoulders of others.
