Why Do I Have To Eat My Greens
by Emma Waddington and Christopher McCurry
(Frances Lincoln, €11.50 HB)
The question of greens is one of 12 issues explored in this volume.
From seat belts to teeth brushing, bath time to suncream application, the challenges are posed by various young toddlers and excellently answered by the expert medical authors.
Humorous illustrations by Louis Thomas will dilute the tense situations. Suitable for age three and upwards.
Ada Twist, Scientist by Andrea Beaty (Abrams Young Readers, €12.70 HB)
The story of Ada Twist is fittingly sandwiched between end-paper graph-paper as it charts the development of a girl’s constantly enquiring search for scientific answers.
After three quiet years of merely observing life, Ada bursts into inquisitive action, with help from her supportive parents though at times having to be restrained by them.
When she notices a noxious smell in her house, she sets out to find its source and why it should be stinky in the first place.
Her enthusiasm is brilliantly captured by illustrator David Roberts and together with a nursery rhyme-like narrative the end result is an inspiring multi- cultural masterpiece. Suitable for age six and upwards.
The Wolf Wilder by Katherine Rundell (Bloomsbury, €8.10)
When Feo’s mother is arrested by the wicked Mikhail Rostov in pre-revolutionary Russia, she sets out immediately to track her down to set her free.
Tracking comes second nature to feisty Feo as she is a trainee wolf-wilder who can call on the assistance of three magnificent wolves.
Her mission to find her mother could not succeed without the help of a disillusioned boy soldier and some like-minded youngsters she meets on her travels.
The different personalities of the wolves are excellently drawn by Rundell and they emerge as characters in their own rights.
The sense of isolation in a forbidding landscape is almost palpable and the build up of tension as Feo and her minute army reach St Petersburg is stunning. Suitable for age 12 and upwards.
