ONE of the most un-Irish looking Irishmen in Ireland has been voted the sexiest Irishman of 2009.
It’s probably only fitting in a sense that his name, Baz Ashmawy, is pretty much as un-Irish as you could get as well.
Nonetheless, a panel of eight judges, recruited by Social & Personal magazine from the worlds of fashion, beauty, fitness, entertainment, business and sport, recently compiled their list of the 100 sexiest Irishmen for 2009, and TV personality Baz got top billing.
“With Egyptian and Irish blood flowing through his veins; it’s easy to understand why 33-year-old Baz Ashmawy doesn’t look like your typical Irish guy, which may be a reason why he was ranked by our judges at No 1 on this year’s list,” a spokesperson for S&P said.
Baz said: “I was embarrassed when I heard. It’s fairly flattering and very humbling.”
He has spent the past number of months travelling around Ireland and the States working on his next TV project, Baz’s Culture Clash, which will be screened on RTÉ next month.
Down the list were, at 95, George Hook, described as the “people’s presenter”, and an instantly recognisable face in Irish media.
At 96 was Gary Lightbody, lead singer of Snow Patrol, and at 97 Micheál Martin, the Cork-born minister who dropped from his 95 position last year.
The glorious bottom on the list was the preserve of Ray D’Arcy, presenter of The Ray D’Arcy Show on Today FM.
