St Mary’s 1-15 Skellig Rangers 1-6: St Mary’s claimed their third consecutive South Kerry SFC title with a nine-point win over Skellig Rangers at Con Keating Park, Cahersiveen on Saturday.
St Mary’s, who will be operating in the top flight of the county league next season, had too much firepower for the brave Portmagee outfit who will pe playing Division 4 football in 2017. The title was a fitting send off for winning manager Maurice Fitzgerald who joined Eamonn’s Fitzmaurice’s county management team last month.
Fitzgerald said: They are a group that never press the panic button and we came back out in the second half and worked hard. It means everything to the lads and me to have won our own championship. They are a fantastic group of footballers who are very easy to motivate. They are self-driven”.
St Mary’s started brightly with two points from Daniel Daly before Skellig Rangers top gun Ciarán Keating kicked a fine long-range effort in the 8th minute. And then the underdogs shocked their hosts with Diarmuid Keating’s well taken 12th-minute goal. Moments later Ciarán Keating extended the lead to 1-2 to 0-3 but that score was to sting St Mary’s into action.
Bryan Sheehan and Denis Daly took over at midfield and St Mary’s began to score at will with Sean Cournane, Sheehan and Daly firing them into a 0-8 to 1-2 interval lead.
And there was not let up on the restart as Aidan Walsh, Daniel Daly, Paul O’Donoghue all registering points before Anthony Cournane flicked the ball to the Rangers’ net to complete the win.
Meanwhile former Kerry star Declan O’Sullivan is set to take charge of his native Dromid Pearses next season.
