Super subs keep Longford on top

Two second half goals from substitutes Austin Skelly and Michael Lee ensured Longford Town claimed their second win over Waterford United this season and remain top of the Airtricity First Division.

After a scoreless first half, Waterford had a chance to go in front on 60 minutes but somehow Paul Phelan cracked a close range effort off the top of the crossbar.

Though the home side dominated, they were made pay on 66 minutes when Keith Gillespie’s right-wing corner was flicked into the path of Austin Skelly and his left-footed shot beat Packie Holden in goal.

Longford Town goalkeeper Craig Hyland denied the home side an equaliser on 86 minutes with a brilliant block but the visitors ensured all three points in the final minute when Michael Lee shot past Holden.

WATERFORD UNITED: Holden; Carey, Burns (McGrath 75), Long, Frost; Ryan (Mernagh 87), White, Dempsey, Phelan; Keegan, Maguire.

LONGFORD TOWN: Hyland; Haverty, Hope, Flood, Crawley; Salmon, Kirby, Gillespie, Duffy (Lee 82); Bermingham, Shaw (Skelly 42)
