Shamrock Rovers surge into fourth round of FAI Cup
Shamrock Rovers 2 Sligo Rovers 1
Headed goals from Padraig Amond and Aidan Price gave Shamrock Rovers their first win in twelve games to put them into the fourth round of the FAI Cup.
The win avenged the Hoops exit last season as Sligo played for 70 minutes with ten men
The first real note of a tight, competitive game was unfortunately the sending off of Sligo left-back Chris Butler on 21 minutes.
Booked earlier for a foul on Alan Murphy, Butler was shown a second yellow by Cork referee Anthony Buttimer for a challenge on Ger O'Brien and was off.
Poor in the first half, Shamrock were better from the resumption and took the lead on 51 minutes when striker Amond met Sean O'Connor's free-kick in from the right to head past Patrick Jennings.
Nine minutes later captain Price added a second goal with a towering header from Murphy's corner.
But Sligo didn't lie down and Anto Murphy crashed home on 66 minutes after Shamrock failed to clear a corner following a brilliant save by Barry Murphy from Matt Judge.
