Roberto Martinez says James McCarthy will push on next season

Everton boss Roberto Martinez is confident Irish midfielder James McCarthy does not need to undergo an intense summer training regime in order to avoid further injuries.

The Republic of Ireland international has been instrumental the Toffees winning five of their last six Premier League fixtures, with McCarthy fit having being plagued with injury.

“The James McCarthy situation from a physical point of view and nutritional I think we have found the right formula,” claimed the Catalan.

“If you want to think about this summer, obviously he has got international commitments but all he needs really is a good period of rest and regeneration

“He showed signs that he was returning to his very best as he opened the scoring in the 3-0 win against Manchester and despite McCarthy’s comments that he ought to score more often, his club boss refuted these claims.

“No, no, I wouldn’t say that we expect more goals from him I think his record is phenomenal so far and long may that continue,” enthused Martinez.

“I always like to say that James McCarthy’s assurance for me is that he is someone that gives you fantastic balance and in the last 6 or 7 weeks we allowed him to have a different role.
