Darren Dennehy strikes as St Patrick’s Athletic progress in Europa League

Jeunesse Esch (Luxembourg) 2 St Patrick’s Athletic 1 (2-2 on agg, Pat’s win on away goals)
Darren Dennehy picked the perfect time to get his first goal for St Patrick’s Athletic as his headed effort sent the Saints through to the next round of the Europa League.

Dennehy crashed home a header from Keith Treacy’s corner to score a crucial goal that ultimately sends the Saints to the second qualifying round.

Pat’s led 1-0 from the first leg in Inchicore but Patrick Stumpf’s first-half goal levelled the tie on aggregate last night.

In a tense second half, Dennehy snatched the vital away goal on 73 minutes for Liam Buckley’s men, who still had to survive a storming fightback, as Stumpf scored his second.

The SSE Airtricity League side held on, however, and Jeunesse finished with 10 men as Adrien Portier was sent off at the death.

St Pat’s will now meet Belarusian side Dinamo Minsk or Spartaks Jurmala of Latvia.

St Patrick’s Athletic: Clarke, O’Brien, Birmingham, D Dennehy, Hoare, Cawley, Byrne, Treacy (Verdun 82), Fagan, Timlin (G Kelly 79), B Dennehy.
