Daly bags winner for Irish boys

Ireland U16 1 Germany U16 0
Ireland’s U16 side achieved yesterday what the senior team failed so miserably to do last October by defeating Germany.

The solitary goal in this opening game of the four-nation Uefa tournament came on 17 minutes from Derek Daly at the St Kevin’s Boys- Shanowen Road venue.

The winger controlled a free-kick from his St Kevin’s Boys teammate at the back post before cutting inside and drilling a low shot past Nicolas Tix in the German goal.

Germany owned the second half, forcing Sunderland bound goalkeeper James Talbot into a string of top class saves.

Ireland play again today at Whitehall against Romania (5pm), who were hammered 5-0 by Belgium in yesterday’s other game.

IRELAND: Talbot (Home Farm); Deasy (Malahide Utd), Kane (Cherry Orchard), Casey (St Joseph’s Boys), Breslin (St Kevin’s Boys); Elworthy (St. Kevin’s Boys), Duggan (Malahide United), Poynton (East Meath United), Daly (St Kevin’s Boys); Dolan (St Kevin’s Boys), Ramadan (Ipswich Town).

Subs: Tuite (Derby County) for Poyton (55), Devers (Manulla) for Daly (65).
