Wexford Youths 2 Drogheda United 0: It was a Halloween treat for Wexford Youths as two superb second-half goals handed them the advantage over Drogheda United following this first-leg promotion/relegation playoff at Ferrycarrig Park last night.
Drogheda dominated the opening 15 minutes. They came close to getting off the mark after ten minutes when Richie Purdy saw his low left-footed shot from 25m rebound off the upright back into play with keeper Graham Doyle well beaten. Six minutes later Gareth McCaffrey headed off the crossbar from a corner.
The Youths, who were lucky to still be in the game, eventually began to impose themselves on the game. Eight minutes before the break, Chris Kenny fired wide from a Johnny Bonner corner, while at the opposite end a quick advance from keeper Graham Doyle denied Mark Griffin as he cut in on goal, while Aidan Keenan fired wide at the opposite end.
The Youths increased the tempo in the second half, forcing an early corner, while after 59 minutes, Bonner had a shot that was well held by keeper McGuinness.
Drogheda were content to soak up pressure while still mounting counter-attacks of their own, Purdy bringing a fine save out of Doyle.
As it looked like Youths were being pinned back, they pounced for a super goal just after the hour mark when Danny Furlong rifled a 20m effort high into the top right-hand corner of the net.
Four minutes from the end Furlong forced a superb save from McGuinness as the Youths sought a second goal, which arrived three minutes into additional time when Lee Chin powered home a tremendous shot from outside the area.
