Joker Jackson too busy for video shenanigans

Ireland’s most famous Nizlopi fan has given up lip-syncing for the time being.

Ulster and Ireland out-half Paddy Jackson became a YouTube sensation as he mimed along to The JCB Song, but he’s fully focused on rugby this season.

“The atmosphere in camp’s great,” said Jackson. “Obviously last year didn’t go that well so there’s an expectation among the players. We’re all looking forward to the tournament and with Joe [Schmidt, new coach] there, it’s really exciting.

“He knows what he wants and demands a lot from the players, so the camp’s been pretty busy so far. Everyone just wants to get stuck in.

“I’m looking forward to learning as much as I can from him. He’s been very successful and in his dealings with players he’s very hands-on. He’s got a lot to teach us and I’m certainly looking forward to working with him, as is everyone.”

That Nizlopi video shouldn’t be used as evidence the players have time to kill — Jackson says there’s plenty of work to do even when not on the training field.

“I don’t think I’ll be doing any more videos, I’m focusing on rugby — no lip-syncing at the moment,” laughs Jackson.

“There can be some down-time in camp, but it’s also a place for work, and we’d put a lot of focus on ourselves. We’ve talked about that as a group, the players, that we need to use our time to do our homework, to make sure we know the plays and patterns until they become second nature on the pitch.

“That’s what we do a lot of the time we’re not actually training. There’s also the issue of rest when you’re not training, so you’ve got plenty to do.”

Still, when the evening draws in you’ve got to relax...

“Well, a lot of them are watching Breaking Bad. That’s the favourite at the moment. Movie-wise the big hit seems to be Wolf of Wall Street. You can make what you want of that!”
