Star duo in Lockinge shake-up

CANFORD Cliffs is set for his clash with Twice Over after the pair remained among a field of 11 at the five-day stage of this weekend’s JLT Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.

Richard Hannon, trainer of Canford Cliffs, has long had the Group One in mind as a starting point for a colt who starred in the Irish 2000 Guineas, St James’s Palace and Sussex Stakes last term.

Hannon has also included stablemate and regular rival Dick Turpin, who won the bet365 Mile at Sandown in impressive fashion from another Lockinge entry, Cityscape.

Twice Over was third in the 2009 Lockinge and will step down to a mile for the first time since that run.

Henry Cecil had subsequently managed to land three Group Ones with the six-year-old but must revive him from a poor run in the Dubai World Cup.

Aidan O’Brien’s only representative is Jan Vermeer, with Godolphin just fielding Shakespearean.

Clive Cox could be double-handed with Balthazaar’s Gift and Beacon Lodge, while Premio Loco, Red Jazz and Italian raider Worthadd completing the line-up.
