Denis Prendergastand and Kevin Power complete point-to-point double
The pair got off the mark when Icing On The Cake (4/1) destroyed the opposition in the five-year-old geldings’ maiden, the race that attracted the biggest field of the day in 11 runners.
Icing On The Cake, who still held an eight-length advantage when falling three out on his career debut in Hard To Call’s Horse And Jockey maiden last month, led from the third fence and he jumped superbly in the main apart from blundering at the fourth last.
The winning bay was soon back on an even keel and from two out, it was clear he was possessing too many aces for runner-up Mahlers Star.
“We expected him to do that at Horse And Jockey, but he just ran a bit free there, “Prendergast said of Icing On The Cake, bought by Kevin Ross Bloodstock at the 2013 Derby sale. “He settled much better today.”
Sounds Of Italy (5/2) completed the Prendergast/Power two-timer in the closing winners of one.
Donnchadh Doyle is experiencing a terrific run at present and he sent out his 16th winner of the term when Unravelthemystery (2/1) impressed by making a winning debut in the four-year-old geldings’ maiden.
The Darsi-sired Unravelthemystery made virtually all the running, jumping impeccably in the process for Barry O’Neill. The 2014 Land Rover sale graduate was well in command from two out and, although running down the final fence, he still dismissed Sporting Milan by a comprehensive three lengths.
Derek O’Connor rarely leaves this meeting empty-handed and he combined with long-standing ally Sean Aherne to capture the adjacent hunts maiden with ex-handicap hurdler Buckskin Boulta (7/2).
Owned by Aherne but in whom former professional jockey Bob Townend also holds an interest, Buckskin Boulta led until headed by Battling Spirit from two out. Buckskin Boulta is however a resolute character and he fought back to lead inside the final 50 yards.
Frontrunning tactics similarly proved successful when the James Hannon-ridden Dubaicalie (5/1) led or disputed the running virtually throughout in the four-year-old mares’ maiden, a race that came complete with a generous €1, 000 bonus to the winner. Dubaicalie, one of just two horses trained by Maurice Keane outside Conna, fought off Queeny approaching the last and she then asserted on the run-in to eclipse the eyecatching Sister Saragh by two and a half lengths. Trainer/rider Turlough O’Connor steered Camille Montes (6/1) to a convincing victory in the six-year-old and upwards mares’ maiden.
