Team Ike springs surprise in ‘Rakes’

There were upsets in the featured Rakes of Mallow Stake, the all-aged stake and the Derby Trial Stake at Mallow yesterday.

In the Rakes of Mallow Stake, Glenlough Mick was the overnight evens favourite but he went out by four lengths in the quarter-final to Carrowkeal Jonjo who was then installed a 4-6 chance to take the prize. Carrowkeal Jonjo advanced to the final when accounting for the bitch Glenbowen Tess, by a similar distance in the semi-final.

At the top of the draw Team Ike had little difficulty in seeing off Caoimhannas Budy in his quarter-final while the fancied Fleetwood James came out on top against Mr Donn by a length. However the surprises continued with Team Ike getting the better of Fleetwood James in the semi-final and then going on to beat Carrowkeal Jonjo by a length when coming from behind in the decider.

Clon Carlos, trained by in Skibbereen by Denis O’Driscoll, was the outsider in the betting at 8/1 before the quarter-finals of the Derby Trial Stake with Crafty Korozo 4-6 to book his passage to Clonmel. As things worked out the pair met in the decider with Clon Carlos coming from behind to take the honours against Crafty Korozo, who had a tough semi-final, by three lengths.

Cryptic Sunset, beaten in the first round of the Oaks Trial Stake at Abbeydorney by the eventual winner, was the market leader in the Reserve Oaks Trial Stake and duly obliged when seeing off Aghadown Josie by three parts of a length for the only score in a thrilling decider.
