Kinsale set to light up the summer

World champions, Olympians and the next generation of sailing stars will light up the waters around Kinsale in Co Cork this summer.

Kinsale Yacht Club will play host to the Optimist National Championships at the end of July before the Brewin Dolphin Dragon Gold Cup comes to town in September.

The Optimist Nationals expect over 200 entries to Kinsale from all over Ireland. As participants are aged U14, they will bring a family entourage and atmosphere to Kinsale, explained Cameron Good, Commodore of Kinsale Yacht Club. The Optimist will compete from July 31-August 4 while the Dragon Gold Cup takes place from September 8-14.

The latter event is considered the World Cup of Dragon Sailing and several world champions and ex-olympians have already entered from 15 countries as over 200 dragon sailors are expected to sail off Kinsale over six days. These include current world champion, Lawrie Smith, Marcus Wieser, Tommy Muller and Vincent Hoesch.

Good expressed gratitude for the title sponsorship of private investment managers, Brewin Dolphin, official product partner Dubarry and the support of the Irish Sailing Association and Fáilte Ireland.
