BIRDIE TIME

Adrian Russell daubs on the war paint, checks out the new hair-dos and introduces us all to the Ryder Cup WAGs of 2010

GAYNOR MONTGOMERIE

Captain Colin Montgomerie’s missus insists she’ll take a back-seat approach to the ritual of the tournament – in contrast to her American counterpart, more of which anon – telling pals she will stay low-key during the event. Monty can do the talking for both, however.

DIANE DONALD

Luke Donald’s new wife first appeared at the K Club in Straffan, Co Kildare four years ago and is now a mainstay of the well-manicured gaggle. Use the force wisely, Luke.

JO FISHER

Wife of Ross, Jo was heavily pregnant during the 2009 Open, causing her husband no end of distraction as he waited for a call. No such worry this time out.

SANNA HANSON

Wife of Peter, this Scandinavian beauty will have to take it handy on the pink champagne in the Brown Thomas tent as she’s expecting the couple’s second child at the moment. Let’s hope she’ll still toast a European win come Sunday with a non-alcoholic drink.

CAROLINE HARRINGTON

The Dublin girl met Pádraig when Carloine’s father took her to see a junior golf championship as a teenager. Years later she’s still behind the rope, often acting as psychologist, statistician and general organiser.

MONTSERAT BRAVO RAMIREZ

The Spanish pair – she’s married to Miguel Angel Jimenez – have been married almost two decades and have shunned the spotlight. An easy-going Salamancan, she does not object to Miguel Angel’s cigar smoking or brillo pad facial hair.

ALISON MICHELETTI

Martin made the Ryder Cup team, in part, by winning the PGA Championship. That achievement pales in comparison to his bagging girlfriend Allison Micheletti. Well played, Mr Kaymer.

GRAEME MCDOWELL

The unhitched Portrush man is quite the catch after a stunning year that saw him clinch the US Open title. The Portrush native will be keeping his head down over the weekend, however.

HOLLY SWEENEY

McDowell’s pal Rory McIlroy has provoked the Tiger this week with some innocuous but much-hyped comments. The world expects a backlash, but whatever the outcome, longtime girlfriend Holly Sweeney will welcome the curly-headed Holywood lad off the course on Sunday evening.

ANNA ROSCIO

Anna is the longtime girlfriend of Edoardo Molinari and once caddied – ie dragged his heavy bag around a golf course a few times a week – before she was fired. Edoardo insists it was for the sake of their relationship.

VALENTINA MOLINARI

Edoardo’s brother Francesco is married to the younger Valentina and lives in London where they enjoy West End plays and eating out. That’s more like it.

KATIE POULTER

Katie married dedicated follower of fashion Ian in 2007 after a romance of more than 10 years. Katie was a nurse when they met and is one of the few women whose outfits are upstaged by those of her husband.

LEE WESTWOOD

Laurae was fated to be a golf wife. She met Lee at the 1995 Scottish Open through her brother Andrew Coltart, another pro. Laurae gave up her job as a beautician when she became a mother and is more likely to be found in a kids’ club than a champagne bar.

LISA PAVIN

THE group is led by 36-year-old Pavin, wife of the team captain Corey. Happy to be referred to as the ‘Captainess’, she recently raised more than eyebrows in the conservative golf world with a very racy appearance on the cover of Avid Golfer magazine in which she draped herself in the American flag – and little else.

AMY MICKELSON

Wife of Phil, she started dating Lefty in university in Arizona in 1992. They have been together since and married in 1996. Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009 and despite having only attended one tournament – this year’s US Masters – since the diagnosis, she has made the journey to Celtic Manor .

ANGIE WATSON

Wife of Bubba Watson, Angie was a star player for the Lady Bulldogs basketball team at Georgia University where her future husband was a restless player on the golf team.

TIGER WOODS

Ooops. This is embarrassing. After a traumatic year filled with salacious tabloid stories of Tiger’s wild sex life, he’ll be hoping to make headlines the right way this week.

TABITHA FURYK

Wife of blue-collar Detroit native Jim Furyk, Tabitha arrives this week a happy woman after her husband’s $11m win last week.

NICKI STRICKER

Another old romantic, it once got so low for Steve Stricker he too felt he had to fire his wife as caddie. Considered one of the more knowledgeable women in the wives room, Nicki is a superb golfer.

AMANDA CAULDER

Longtime girlfriend of Dustin Johnson, the couple share a house in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where I once lived for a summer. They may get a shock when they sample Newport in October.

CHRISTINA ZIMMER

As Sam Torrance said once, from the shadows, come heroes in the Ryder Cup. Jeff Overton is playing in his first tournament and gorgeous partner Christina will take the limelight too should Overton take a starring role.

SYBIL KUCHAR

Married to another rookie in Matt Kuchar, Sybil was a standout tennis player at Georgia Tech, where the couple met. They teamed in 2009 to win the consolation title in the USTA National Husband/Wife Doubles Championship at the ATP Headquarters in Florida.

LISA CINK

Married to another controversial captain’s pick, Stuart, the pair met on campus at Georgia Tech. The most popular Twitter-user in golf with over one million followers, Cink has spoken openly about the tough early years with his new wife as he struggled initially on tour.

ALEXANDRA BROWNE

Perhaps the most interesting of the captain’s picks, Rickie Fowler is one for the future. And Alexandra, daughter of professional golfer Olin Browne, is in contention to be one of the top WAGs for years.

KIM JOHNSON

Husband Zach proposed at Wrigley Field during a Chicago Cubs game. Strike one...

KANDI HARRIS

Along with Corey Pavin’s wife, Hunter Mahan’s partner has caused a stir in golf’s corduroys. A former Dallas Cowboy cheerleader, the 24-year-old is now engaged to Mahan after a whirlwind romance.
