Tribesmen to blood new quartet

MANAGER Ger Loughnane introduces four newcomers to the Galway team for Saturday’s All-Ireland SHC qualifier against Laois at O’Moore Park, Portlaoise.

Receiving their call-up papers are goalkeeper Colm Callinan, centre back John Lee, midfielder Eoin Lynch and left-half forward Iarla Tannian.

Also included in the new-look Galway side are Alan Kerins at right-half forward and Eugene Cloonan, who takes over the full-forward position.

Injuries to Eamon Corcoran, Lar Corbett, Shane McGrath and James Woodlock have forced the Tipperary management to delay the announcing of their team to play Offaly in the All-Ireland SHC qualifier at Semple Stadium, Thurles on Saturday until just before the throw-in.

Laois make two changes in personnel and a number of positional switches for their Leinster SFC semi-final against Wexford at Croke Park on Sunday.

Although Tom Kelly and Brian McDonald will be subject to late fitness tests, Kelly is named at full back by manager Liam Kearns in the absence of the injured Aidan Fennelly. Midfielder Noel Garvan also misses out, sidelined with an ankle injury, and Padraig Clancy takes his place in midfield. Clancy’s switch from wing forward means that Michael John Tierney moves out from corner forward to the wing with Donie Brennan slotting in at top of the right.

Kildare make one change to their team ahead of their Christy Ring Cup clash against Derry on Saturday. As expected Tipperary’s Paddy O’Brien doesn’t start because of a hamstring injury. Brendan Byrne starts instead at corner forward, with another ex-Tipp man, Mattie Dowd, moving to wing forward. Otherwise the team is the same as the side which beat cup favourites Wicklow last weekend.

Kildare’s chances against Roscommon in the forthcoming All-Ireland qualifier in Dr Hyde Park have received something of a boost. It appears that skipper Dermot Earley has finally been given the all-clear to return to training. Earley who has been plagued with a number of foot injuries, will be hoping to be involved at some stage in the game but is scarcely likely to figure in the starting line-up.

On the debit side Athy’s Michael Foley limped off with a suspected hamstring problem when assisting his club in the Kildare SFL last weekend. He faces a race against time to be fit for the Roscommon game.
