Tribe U21s sweat on Ó Curraoin

Galway’s All-Ireland U21-winning midfielder Fiontain Ó Curraoin has been named in the side for the opening defence of their crown in tomorrow night’s Cadbury’s Connacht U21FC quarter-final against Mayo in McHale Park but remains a major doubt due to an ankle injury.

“Fiontain is still a big concern for us,” admits Galway U21 boss Gerry Fahy, who has previously managed the Offaly senior side. “He’s a massive player for us and showed that with the U21s last year. He’s now a senior footballer as well with Galway so would be a big loss if he can’t make it.”

Ó Curraoin is one of seven members of last year’s championship-winning side in Fahy’s starting XV. Goalkeeper Manus Breathnach, corner-back Gary Sweeney, full-back Jonathan Duane, centre-forward Tomás Flynn, full-forward Patrick Sweeney and corner-forward Eric Monahan all started in the decider against Cavan last May, while wing-back Conor O’Halloran and midfielder Brian Flaherty both featured as substitutes in that Croke Park clash.

Mayo have delayed naming their team but manager Ray Dempsey is expected to select star man Cillian O’Connor despite the senior player having battled injury recently. Defensive duo Keith Rogers (cruciate) and Conor Horan (fractured finger) will definitely be marked absent.

Clare senior footballers Conor Ryan and Padraic Collins have both shaken off injury worries to be named in the side for tomorrow night’s Munster U21FC quarter-final against Limerick in the Gaelic Grounds. Ryan has had a groin injury while Collins broke a finger recently but the duo have overcome those knocks to start at midfield and centre-forward respectively.

Manager Colm Collins has named four other senior football panellists in wing-back Stephen Tierney, wing-forwards Darren O’Neill and Shane Brennan and corner-forward Sean O’Driscoll, while county senior hurler Cathal McInerney will start at full-forward.

“Injuries have interrupted the preparations a bit but we’ve got a good response from a good group of players,” says Clare boss Collins.

Limerick manager John Cummins will build his side around senior panellists James O’Meara and Eoghan O’Connor, who will line out at wing-back and centre-forward respectively. Gerald Griffins player Tommy Griffin and Fr Casey’s Shane O’Connor were both unavailable for selection due to hamstring injuries.

Three members of last year’s Tipperary All-Ireland minor-winning side will start for the county U21 side against Kerry in tomorrow night’s Munster U21FC quarter-final in Semple Stadium.

Goalkeeper Evan Comerford, full-forward Michael Quinlivan and corner-forward Liam McGrath, who captained the minor team, were all involved in last September’s triumph. Midfielder Aldo Matassa is the only survivor from the Tipperary team that claimed provincial honours against Kerry two years ago.
