Thurles in control after easy victory over Ardscoil Rís

Thurles CBS (Tipperary)3-12 Ardscoil Rís (Limerick)0-12
Thurles CBS gained a firm stranglehold on Group 1 of the Harty Cup with an impressive nine point victory over holders Ardscoil Rís at MacDonagh Park, Nenagh yesterday.

Ardscoil must now beat rivals West Limerick Colleges next week in a derby clash to keep alive hopes of making the last eight.

This was a below-par performance from Ardscoil, who managed five points from play over 67 minutes. Limerick underage star Ronan Lynch, one of seven Na Piarsaigh players in the starting line-up, had seven points from placed balls. In contrast, Thurles had scores from eight players, including all six starting forwards.

Subs Michael O’Connor and Paul Kennedy were also on the scoresheet but it was the inside line that was most clinical. Jack Butler, Matty Stakelum and Robbie Long goaling, the latter starring, hitting 1-3.

Just three points separated the sides at half-time and while Ardscoil unloaded with a run of five unanswered points, goals either side of that purple patch kept Thurles in the hunt. Butler struck first in the ninth minute and with Thurles desperately in need of a score following a 14-minute barren spell, the corner forward set up Stakelum for a well-taken second goal four minutes before half-time.

Long tagged on a point as Thurles led 2-3 to 0-6 at half-time and a quickfire 1-1 after the restart effectively sealed victory.
