St Val’s snatch historic first title

St. Val’s 0-11 Inch Rovers 1-07
Cork legend Briege Corkery kicked the winning point to lead St. Val’s to their first county senior title in their 18-year history on an emotional afternoon at CIT yesterday.

With Inch Rovers on the verge of their fifth title in six years, Aoife Plunkett kicked the equaliser with only seconds remaining.

Then, two minutes into injury time, Corkery demanded the ball 40 metres out from goal and, with her weaker foot, arrowed the winner between the posts.

“I’m normally told by Joe Carroll (St Val’s selector) to never shoot with my left leg, but I had no other choice. I took the pot, someone had to and thank God we got there,” she beamed afterwards.

“For the club itself, for the girls who have been training all year, for the girls who have retired, for all the trainers and those who have been involved over the years; it’s an amazing feeling,” added the match-winner.

It was a game which could have gone either way, but ultimately, Inch will have to consider the cause of their downfall to have been their 15-wide total, seven of which came from the boot of Cork great Mary O’Connor.

The ball belonged to them for the opening 10 minutes but while they kicked the first four of their wides, Val’s returned four scores from their five visits to the Inch half of the field, with Caoimhe Creedon in outstanding form.

Claire Byrne was sin-binned for Val’s after 20 minutes and with Ann-Marie Walsh, in the free role, and Sarah Harrington running the show, Inch outscored Val’s by 1-3 to 0-1; the goal coming from Rachel Galvin.

Annie Walsh put Inch a point up at the break but thereafter, they kicked nine wides in a 20-minute period.

A pair of O’Connor frees looked to have given Inch the cup but Creedon made it close before Plunkett and Corkery plundered the spoils.
