Sligo 0-19 Antrim 1-11

Sligo are champions of the NFL Division Three after a thoroughly convincing win over Antrim in the second of today’s Croke Park double-bill.

In doing so, the Westerners reversed the result of the corresponding league fixture and will ply their trade in the second tier next season.

The Yeats County Boss, Kevin Walsh, himself a former All-Ireland medal winner with Galway spoke during the week about his side's desire to land a national title and he got his wish tonight with quite a bit to spare.

"I’ve said all the week it would be a super boost for the county if we could lift a national title at Croke Park and now we’ve done, so there's no lack of motivation for the lads to go on now and try to achieve more,” he said.

“It's a great opportunity for the players to enjoy the special atmosphere of Croke Park and we wanted them to go out and enjoy the occasion and express themselves which they did and I’m thrilled for them and the people of Sligo.”

While the winning margin of five points may not be much, the game as a contest was sewn up long before the final whistle.

Even though Michael McCann’s goal for the Northern men trimmed the margin to just two points with 58 minutes played, Sligo finished with a flourish and rattled over four exquisite points through the outstanding David Kelly (2) and one each for Killian Sweeney and Colm McGee.

Paddy Cunningham was Antrim’s best player on the day, racking up the majority of his sides points from corner-forward but too often he was isolated and lacked the support from his colleagues.

Antrim: J Finucane; C Brady, A McClean, K Boyle; T Scullion, J Crozier, S Kelly; M McCann, B Herron; T O’Neill, CJ McGourty, J Loughrey; P Cunningham, M Magill, T McCann.
